AN INTRODUCTORY EVENT FOR ALL STUDENTS IN THE DISCIPLINE OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
PROGRAMME
The COVID-19 pandemic, posed challenges for social interactions crucial in education. Eventually, in 2022, in-person lectures were permitted again, but returning to campus was challenging due to virus fears and unfamiliarity among students. To address this, the Computer Science discipline initiated a project to foster a sense of community among students. They decided to design a Computer Science -themed t-shirt to remind students of their shared purpose and innovations in solving modern problems. UKZN Computer Science students were engaged to create design templates, boosting their ownership of the university’s brand. After evaluating designs, one was selected, featuring elements reflecting the essence of computer science. The t-shirt production was sponsored by industry partners BSG and FNB. Launch events were held on two campuses, Westville and Pietermaritzburg, with participation from over 700 students and staff. Alumni from BSG and FNB shared their experiences and insights, motivating attendees to excel in their careers. The Computer Science induction initiative’s success was possible due to the support of industry partners, the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, and the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science. Gratitude was extended to all who contributed to the initiative’s achievement. |
